“Ambient 5: Music for Masturbation” is the long awaited addition to the series of ambient music collections Brian Eno began in the early 1970s.
Mr. Eno answered some questions about the album via e-mail.
What was the genesis of this project?
“I was discussing the fermentation techniques of the Benedictine monks with Phil Manzanera while on holiday in Montserrat, when I first hit on the idea. When I was done talking, I excused myself to go have a wank up in my hotel suite. I must have spent a good twenty minutes fiddling with my Ipod, trying to find some music to enhance my mood. It was impossible. I got so frustrated; I ended up just taking a nap. When I awoke, my idea for ‘Ambient 5’ was born
What is your strategy for this album?
“This is not music to be actively listened to. It’s meant to be put on whilst doing other things, namely masturbating”
Are there any special guests on the album?
“No. I did the whole thing solo. Although, David Bowie did come by and watch a few times.”
Do you have any trepidation releasing another volume of such a highly regarded series after so many years?
“Not at all. I think it is healthy and should be enjoyed by anyone who wishes to partake. I harbor no guilt or shame taking so long to do it.”
“Ambient 5: Music for Masturbation” will be self-released on Eno’s Enowerks record label on July 26th.
